When you take a photo at a given location the value (potential usage and availability) of the photo can be enhanced by including the position where the photo was taken in the meta-data of the picture itself. Some digital cameras can do this (either by including a GPS or by getting location information from an external GPS device). Another approach is to add this information later (see Geocoding photos. This can be done by merging your photos with a GPS track (your camera/photos has to be timed synced with your GPS device). The idea is that if you are tracking your location while taking pictures you will know exactly where you were at the given time when the photo was taken, and you can fetch this information from the GPS track file (GPX or KML). Earlier I have tested (and used) the photo/gps-track merger GPSPhotoLinker (free, donations accepted), the Google Earth based Geotagger, the iPhoto lugin iPhotoToGoogleEarth, and the photo meta-data editor PhotoInfoEditor. A few days ago I found HoudahGeo (€25). This application combines the feature of many of the applications above (provides different approaches to add position information to photos). HoudahGeo seams to be easy to use and integrates well with iPhoto/Apperture and Google Earth/Flickr. In my case, the source of tracking information is either my Garmin GPS or my iPhone. On the iPhone I'm testing different applications (see my iTrail and TrailRunner (and EveryTrail) posting), including RunKeeper, Trailguru, EveryTrail, MotionX GPS (Lite), GPS Kit, InstaMapper GPS Tracker, and iTrail ($3). The TrailRunner application can be used together with iTrail (and other) to plan and manage routes and tracks. And for Garmin users the Garmin and the Mac page is the source of the Garmin Mac applications RoadTrip (formerly known as Bobcat), MapInstall and more.
